Digital Literacy

According to wikipedia (2010), digital literacy is the ability to function in a an environment replete with current technologies, "Digital literacy is the ability to locate, organize, understand, evaluate, and create information using digital technology. It involves a working knowledge of current high-technology, and an understanding of how it can be used. Digitally literate people can communicate and work more efficiently, especially with those who possess the same knowledge and skills" (para. 1).

Wikipedia (2010) continues to say the following about digital literacy, "Research around digital literacy is concerned with wider aspects associated with learning how to effectively find, use, summarise, evaluate, create and communicate information whilst using digital technologies not just being literate at using a computer" (para. 2).

Indivuals that are digitally literate are referred to as digital citizens, "Digital literacy encompasses computer hardware, software (particularly those used most frequently by businesses), the Internet, cell phones, PDAs, and other digital devices. A person using these skills to interact with society may be called a digital citizen" (Wikipedia contributors, 2010, para. 3).
